Celebrating Every Ability: Barron Swim Abilities Program

In Honor of National Down Syndrome Day

At Barron Swim School, we believe that every child deserves the opportunity to feel confident, safe, and safer in and around the water. This belief is at the heart of our Swim Abilities program—a program designed to meet swimmers exactly where they are and celebrate every step forward.

As we recognize National Down Syndrome Day today, we are proud to highlight not only the incredible swimmers in our program, but also the passionate leader behind it—Ms. Leslie, our Swim Abilities Director.

What is Swim Abilities?

Our Swim Abilities program is designed specifically for swimmers with diverse learning needs, including those with Down syndrome and other developmental or physical differences.

This program goes beyond traditional swim lessons. It focuses on:

  • Building water safety skills at an individualized pace within our exclusive curriculum
  • Encouraging confidence and independence in the water
  • Creating a supportive, patient, and empowering environment
  • Adapting teaching methods to each swimmer’s unique learning style

At Barron, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. Every swimmer is different—and that’s exactly what makes this program so special.

Meet Ms. Leslie: The Heart Behind the Program

At the center of Swim Abilities is someone who has helped shape it into what it is today—Ms. Leslie.

Since joining Barron Swim School in January 2017, Leslie has played a vital role in growing this program from an idea into a meaningful, life-changing experience for so many families and the St. Louis community. Starting as a swim instructor, she quickly recognized a need within the community—and stepped in to fill it with compassion, expertise, and purpose.

Leslie’s passion for teaching children with special needs stems from her years of experience teaching in the Special School District in Mehlville Schools, where she developed the skills and understanding needed to support a wide range of learners.

Today, as Swim Abilities Director, Leslie and the Swim Abiltiites teachers at Barron:

  • Develops and evolves our customized curriculum
  • Trains instructors to provide exceptional, adaptive instruction
  • Hosts events that build community and connection
  • Most importantly, creates individualized lesson plans for each swimmer
  • Offers a swim meet experience that ALL are invited to during Spring and Fall

But if you ask Leslie, she’ll tell you the most important part of her job is simple:

“Meeting each child where they are and helping them succeed in their own way.”
